    the right place to live.

  • All of these approaches can be paid for in different ways. We will discuss your situation and recommend the best option for you. Our goal is to keep our service affordable for the family member, and our initial conversation is free. At that time we can tell you what our fee would be if you choose us to help you.

    Joan Therese's “personal story”

My grandpa planted a seed many years ago by saying that when I grew up I needed to do something - “that people deserve better than this at the end of their life.”

He spent the last eight years of his life in a nursing home with paralysis after having three strokes right after he retired at the age of 65.

From the age of 5 to 13, I witnessed this and how it affected every member of the family.

Being the oldest in my family I was on track to be a caregiver and my first job was in a nursing home working in the kitchen at age 15. Then at 16, I become a nurse’s aide. This was the hardest work I ever did. It was also the poorest paying job I ever had.

I worked in St Mary’s hospital special needs pediatrics unit while attending St. Mary’s College back home in Minneapolis. I graduated with my degree in Human Development with an emphasis in Special Needs in 1971.

Prior to starting my company in 1989, I had spent my entire life working in the human services arena in a wide variety of professional capacities. Highlights are:

    • Creating many community based advocacy programs in area’s of employment and housing in Minnesota for persons with developmental disabilities who were returning to the community from state institutions.

    • Filing a class action law suit on behalf of people who were denied the right to treatment after being discharged from state institutions. We won that lawsuit in Minnesota and it taught me a big lesson about how to get things done in our country and why I don’t like working for the system.

    • Documented the lack of active treatment for people with special needs in nursing homes across Adams County in Denver resulting in many wonderful opportunities for many wonderful people.

    • Care Manager for many clients returning to the community in Colorado

    • Doing assessments for a national research project documenting deinstitutionalization and normalization in America

    • Coordinating the development and construction of the first 6 group homes 20 years ago in Denver

    • Being a resident services director at a nursing home for people with special needs while completing my AIT (Administrator in Training ) program.

    • Opening and filling one of the first retirement communities in Denver

I learned to appreciate when people had families to work with. Helping to empower families to being the best advocate they could be for their loved one is something I really enjoy and get great satisfaction from.

I am proud of my accomplishments and reputation as a resource specialist, advocate, problem solver and visionary in putting together new systems and resources to help people be as independent and happy as possible.

My grandpa is very proud of me.
